Kanembu is a member is of the Western Saharan branch of the Nilo-Saharan language family. It is spoken by about 880,000 people in Chad, particular in provinces of Kanem, Lac, Barh el Gazel, Chari-Baguirmi and Hadjer-Lamis in the southwest of Chad.
Kanembu is also known as Kanembou, Karkawu, Kenembu or Kanem. It is closely related Kanuri, and is classified as a dialect of Kanuri in some sources.
These days, Kanembu is written with the Latin alphabet. It was written with the Arabic script from about the 13th century, and the Arabic script is still used in religious works. The government of Chad created the Chadian National Alphabet (L'Alphabet national tchadien) in 2009 as standarized way to write the indigenous languages of Chad, including Kanembu, with the Latin and Arabic alphabets.
