Ndonga (OshiNdonga)

Ndonga is a Bantu language spoken by about 1.5 million people in northern Namibia and southern Angola. In particular, it is spoken in the regions of Omusati, Oshana, Ohangwena and Oshikoto in Namibia, which are collectively known as the "Four-O region", and historically made up Ovamboland.

Ndonga is also known as Owambo, Otjiwambo or Oshiwambo. It is considered a standardized dialect of the Oshiwambo language, and is mutually intelligible with Kwanyama, another variety of Oshiwambo.

Ndonga was first written in 1876 by Pietari Kurvinen, a Finnish missionary who translated parts of the Bible. Between 1885 and 1920, Martti Rautanen, a Finnish missionary, translated the whole Bible into Ndonga, and written Ndonga is based on his translation. There are some radio broadcasts in Ndonga in Namibia, and it is used in schools.
