Tungag is a member of Western Oceanic branch of the Malayo-Polynesian language family. It is spoken by about 12,000 people on New Hanover Island (Lavongai) and nearby islands in New Ireland Province in the northeast of Papua New Guinea.
The language is also known as Tungak or Lavongai, which is the native name for New Hanover Island. Each village where Tungag is spoken has its own local dialect. The dialects are more or less mutually intelligible. Tungag can be written with the Latin alphabet.
