Mwerlap (N̄wërlap)

Mwerlap is a member of the Southern Oceanic branch of the Malayo-Polynesian language family. It is spoken by about 1,100 people in the Banks Islands in Torba Province in northern Vanuatu. In particular, it is spoken on the islands of Merelava and Merig, and also on the east coast of Gaua island, and in the cities of Port Vila and Luganville.

Mwerlap is also known as Merelava, West Merelava, Merig, Mwerig, Merlav-Merig or Matliwag. The name Mwerlap is a version of N̄wërlap [ŋʷɞrˈlap], the Mwerlap name of Merelava island. The name Merelava is a version of M̄ere Lava ("the big boy"), the name of the island in Mota, a language spoken on a nearby island [source].

Mwerlap is written with the Latin alphabet, and there appear to be several spelling systems. There are some translations of religious texts in the languages.
