Kara is a member of the Western Oceanic branch of the Malayo-Polynesian language family. It has about 5,000 speakers in the Kavieng District in the north of New Ireland Province in the northeast of Papua New Guinea. In particular, it is spoken in the villages of Lemakot, Fangalava, Nonopai, Lamusmus, La'un, Lavolai, Luburua, Panachais, Parawai and Pangafua.
Kara is also known as Kara-Lemakot, Lemusmus or Lemakot. Dialects include East Kara and West Kara. It can be written with the Latin alphabet.
