Ili Turki (İlı turkeşi)

Ili Turki is a member of the Karluk branch of the Turkic language family. It is spoken by about 120 people in northwestern China, in particular in Gongliu, Nilka, Tekes, Xinyuan and Zhaosu counties in the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture (伊犁哈萨克自治州) of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. There are also about 120 speakers of Ili Turki in Kazakhstan. It is spoken by older adults. Younger people are shifting to Uyghur or Kazakh.

Ili Turki is also known as Ili Turk, T’urk, Taranchi, Tu’erke or Tuerke. The native name is İlı turkeşi. It is closely related to the variety of Uyghur spoken in the Ili area.
