Yali

Yali is a member of the Dani group of Trans-New-Guinea languages. It is spoken by about 30,000 people to the east of Baliem Valley in Yalimo Regency in the north of Highland Papua province in eastern Indonesia.

Yali is also known as Yaly, Jalè, Jaly or Yalimo. Dialects include Pass Valley Yali or Western Yali, Ninia Yali or Southern Yali, and Angguruk Yali or Northern Yali. These dialects are classified as separate languages in some sources, and Pass Valley Yali has subdialects.

A way to write Yali with the Latin alphabet was developed in the 1960s by German missionaries, and the Bible was translated into Yali by Siegfried Zöellner, one of those German missionaries.
