Bamukumbit (Maŋkɔŋ)

Bamukumbit is a member of the Eastern Grasslands branch of the Southern Bantoid language family. It is spoken by about 12,000 people in the Northwest Region of Cameroon. In particular, it is spoken in Bamukumbit village in the Balikumbat subdivision in the southwest of the Ngo-Ketunjia Division in the south of the Northwest Region.

Bamukumbit is also known as Bamenkombit, Bamenkoumbit, Bamukoumbit, Bamunkum, Bamukumbit, Mangkong or Mankong. It is written with the Latin alphabet using an orthography proposed by the Mankong Language Committee in 2013. Other spelling systems are available.

Bɨ yi njie, Kwimaŋkɔ’, a kɨ a yi niindɔ̧ nɨ mɨtə̧. Anchɛlɛ’, a kər andər ndɛ̧ ŋkɔ̧ mɨna na. A nɨ mbɨ akoa achə, Kwimaŋkɔ’ kwee njɔ’ a mbu̧a Anchɛlɛ’ njiɛ, mɨ a kər andər ndɛ̧ i, Anchɛlɛ’ bɨnde, njiɛ bɨ i wur ndɔmnɨ andər.

Translation

Everyone knows that the tortoise does not know how to move quickly. The hare runs faster than any other animal. Once upon a time, Tortoise boasted to Hare that he could run faster than him. Hare got angry and said that they should run a race.
