Nateni (Naàteǹni)

Nateni is a member of the Northern Gur branch of the Niger-Congo language family. It is spoken by about 110,000 people in the Atakora Department in the northwest of Benin, particularly in the communes of Cobly, Kouandé, Matéri, Tanguiéta, and Toucountouna.

Nateni is also known as Natimba or Natemba, which also refers to the people who speak it. Dialects include Tayari, Kunteni, Okoni and Nateni, which is the most spoken dialect. It is written with the Latin script using an orthography devised by the Commission Nationale de Linguistique Nateni (Nateni National Linguistic Commission).

Nateni is used in homes, markets and other parts of the Nateni-speaking communities. There are radio programmes in the languages, and parts of the Bible have been translated into Nateni.
