Tai Yo is a Southwestern Tai language spoken by about 60,000 people in central Laos, northeast Thailand and northern Vietnam. In Vietnam it is spoken in Quế Phong, Quỳ Châu and Quỳ Hợp districts of Nghệ An Province. In Laos it is spoken in the Vieng Thong and Khamkeut districts of Borikhamxay Province, and in Thailand, Tai Yo speakers can be found particularly in the provinces of Sakon Nakhon, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nakhon Phanom and Maha Sarakham, and also in Prachinburi and Saraburi.
Tai Yo is known as Tai Mène (ไทแมน) OR (Tai) Nyaw (ญ้อ) in Laos and Thailand, and Tai Do (Tay Dọ) or Tai Quy Chau (Thái Quỳ Châu) in Vietnam.
There are ways to write Tai Yo with the Latin alphabet and the Thai script. It was also written with the Lai Tay script, a descendent of the Khmer script.
