Northwest Gbaya is member of the Savannas branch of the Atlantic-Congo language family. It has about 265,000 speakers mainly in the northwest of the Central African Republic (CAR) and in the Northwest Region Cameroon, and also in the Republic of the Congo and Nigeria.
The main varieties of Northwest Gbaya are: Kara (Kàrà), which is spoken mainly in the Bossangoa district in Ouham Prefecture in the east of the CAR, has the most speakers, and is also known as Gbaya Kara, and also in Cameroon; and Lay (Làì), which is spoken north of Mbodomo in the Northwest Region of Cameroon. The Northwest Gbaya orthography was refined in the 1980s and 1990s.
Northwest Gbaya is written with the Latin alphabet using a spelling system based on the General Alphabet of Cameroonian Languages, which was developed in 1979. Other spelling systems are used in the CAR, and there is no standard orthography.
