Afade is a member of the Biu-Mandara branch of the Chadic language family. It is spoken by about 30,000 people in Nigeria and Cameroon, particularly along the shores of Lake Chad in the Ngala Local Government Area in the northeast of Borno State in the northeast of Nigeria, Afade, a town in the Logone-and in the Logone-Et-Chari and Mayo-Danay departments in the north of the Far North Region of Cameroon.
Afade is also known as Afadeh, Afadee, Kotoko, Lagwan or Mandagué. The people who speak it are known as Afade, Lagwan Afade or Kotoko. There are ways to write Afade with the Latin and Arabic scripts. While older people speak Afade fluently, younger people are shifting to French in Cameroon, and English and/or Hausa in Nigeria. Afade is taught in schools, and efforts are being made to document the language, and to promote the culture of the Afade-speaking people.
