Irish On Your Own

Irish On Your Own/Now You're Talking

by Éamon Ó Dónaill and Deirbhile Ní Churraighín

- a good introduction to the Ulster dialect of Irish based on a popular TV series. Includes a textbook and five cassettes. The textbook is divided into thirty lessons, each of which has a theme: meeting people, expressing opinions, ordering drinks, etc. Each lesson also reviews the language introduced in previous lessons. The main focus of this course is to teach you colloquial spoken Irish.

Unlike other language textbooks, this one has no pronounciation section. Instead you plunge straight into the language and gradually pick up the pronounciation as you go along. In addition the grammatical notes are fairly short and not particularly detailed.

At the back of the textbook there is grammar reference section and a bilingual section entitled "Eolas Úsáideach/Useful Information", which contains a variety of information about the Irish language and its usage in the media, literature, education, etc.; details of where to study the language and some profiles of students of Irish.
