Neo is an international auxiliary language (IAL) created in the 1930s by Arturo Alfandari 1888-1969), a Belgian diplomat. It combines vocabulary based on Latin, French and German with Italian phonology and some grammatical patterns from English and Russian, and also contains elements of Esperanto, Ido, Novial and Volapük. It was designed to be an easy-to-learn second language for everybody.
Alfandari published a version of Neo in 1937, and published more details in the 1960s, including Cours pratique de NEO in 1961, Méthode rapide de NEO in 1965, and Rapid method of NEO in 1966. These publications generated interest in the language.
The publishers of the International Language Review, a periodical for people interested in IALs, set up a group called Amikos de Neo (Friends of Neo) which published the Neo-bulten. Alfandari founded the Akademio de Neo (Academy fof Neo) to regulate, nuture and promote Neo. This organization meet with little succes, and after Alfandari died in 1969, his language largely disappeared into obscurity.
