Melanau is a member of the North Bornean branch of the Malayo-Polynesian language family. It is spoken by about 113,280 people, mainly in the Mukah division of Central Sarawak in Malaysia, and also in the Kuala Belait town area of Brunei.

Melanau is also known as Belana'u, Milanau or Milano. Dialects include Mukah-Oya, Balingian, Bruit, Dalat, Igan, Sarikei, Segahan, Prehan, Segalang and Siteng.
