Louisiana Creole is a French-based creole language spoken by about 6,000 people mainly in Louisiana (Lwizyàn) in the USA. In particular, it is spoken in St. Martin Parish, and in the parishes of St. Landry, Avoyelles, Iberia and St. Mary in southern Louisiana.
Louisiana Creole began to develop in Lousiana during the 18th century, when Louisana was a French colony. It was a result of prolonged interactions between French people and enslaved people from Africa, particularly from the Senegambian region. The slaves spoke languages such as Malinke, Sereer, Wolof, Pulaar and Bamabara.
Names for Louisiana Creole in the language include kouri-vini, kréyòl, kréyol and fransé. It is also known as Lousiana Creole French. It is not the same as Lousiana French, which is a variety of French spoken in Louisiana.
Louisana Creole is considered endangered, however efforts are being made to revitalize it. A popular orthography has been devised, learning materials are being produced, and the language is used in songs and on social media. There is also a film in the language.
