Pamona is a member of the Northern Kaili-Pamona group of Celebic languages. It is spoken by about 140,000 people in Central Sulawesi and South Sulawesi provinces in the Sulawesi Region of Indonesia. In particular, it is spoken in the Poso Regency in Central Sulawesi, and in the nearby Luwu Utara District of South Sulawesi.
Pamona is also known as Poso, Baree or Bare’e. Dialects include Laiwonu, Poso, Rapangkaka, Taa, Tobau, Tokondindi, Tomoni and Topada. The Poso dialect is considered the most prestigious, and is spoken around Lake Poso, and on the nearby coast.
Pamona can be written with the Latin script, and there is a Pamona translation of the Bible.
