First and foremost of all, it is of most important to realise the Chinese language is a multi-syntax language; thus, words can change their meanings depending upon their usages.

語‧this word when used solo, it can mean "speech".
文‧this word when used solo, it can mean "writing".
語文‧the above two words when combined in this manner, it means "language".

「中國人的語文」‧indeed it can be translated as the "Language of the Chinese" but NOT "spoken language of Chinese people" because, 語文 refers to Both the Spoken and the Written Language of which, it simply means "language". Since "Chinese people" can mean "all ethnicities within the country known as China", it is a crime to consider the those who are not ethnic Han as having 漢語 as their language.

漢語，今日已經是一個縱橫在許多民族之間的語言，其方言之多不可數也讓人感受到了漢語的闊。漢語的這個闊，不單單是漢語對於其他民族語言的影響，這個闊也代表漢語本身也被其他語言影響。在漢語中，有個日常的用詞〝馬虎〞，就是個很好的證明。〝馬虎〞，全稱用法為〝馬馬虎虎〞，用意是指某人或某事太隨便的處理。事實上，這〝馬馬虎虎〞早期時的用詞是〝虎鹿馬拉兒〞。

在中國的東北還是有老一輩的人會用〝虎鹿馬拉兒〞一詞。比如「你虎鹿馬拉兒啥？」就是說「你在偷懶什麼？」，而「你虎鹿馬個去！」就是說「你到一邊涼快吧！」（事實上，這等於是罵人的「閃邊去！」）。這東北老人們口中的〝虎鹿馬拉兒〞，事實上是滿族語的借用詞。在滿族語的日常用語之中，有句 hvluri malari （這 hvluri 的 v 是一種 u，而不是以英語的方式發音）。

這 hvluri malari 就是〝虎鹿馬拉兒〞的由來，而〝虎鹿馬拉兒〞之後順序變化成〝馬馬虎虎〞，最終進化成〝馬虎〞一詞。

I came across a rare character while reading a manga. I've looked it up in all my dictionaries but I can't seem to find a meaning. Does anyone here know what the character <﨟> means? It appeared to be part of a compound <上﨟>.

香港現在最流行的就是「潮語」了，「潮語」不是潮州語言，而是潮流用語的意思。
「潮語」普及得連考試都要用它們出題，試題一出，就掀起激烈討論。其中「潛水怕屈機」更因錯解詞義和胡亂堆砌被不斷惡搞。

That is a Japanese usage of which, is independant from the Chinese language.

Hey, thanks! I didn't think to Google it. :oops:

I also found <﨟> in a Korean dictionary. Apparently it means something like "being unknown/unidentified" (kr: 미상/未詳).

現代台灣漢語中的外來語用詞有很多，就拿英語的借用詞來說就很驚人了：

羅曼蒂克蕾絲邊哭雄馬殺雞得來速殺必死 → romantic lesbian cushion massage drive-thru service
羅曼蒂克‧romantic
蕾絲邊‧lesbian
馬殺雞‧massage
得來速‧drive-thru
殺必死‧service
哭雄‧cushion

「潮語」中也有很多外來詞。

賣飛佛 - my favo(u)rite
本是用來嘲諷廣告代言人的口音

十卜（扑） - support
原用於討論區上，表示支持樓主

升呢 - 呢=level
本來代表網遊上升級，現引申為任何方面的升級、升值
