Yuqui is a member of the Guarayu branch of the Tupí-Guaraní language family. It has about 120 speakers in Biá Recuaté and in Puerto Villaroel Municipality in Carrasco Province in Cochabamba Department in central Boliva. It is classified as severely endangered.
Historically, Yuqui speakers were nomadic and could be found in the provinces of Ichilo, Carrasco and Chapare. The Yuqui people believe their ancestors came from Chapare Province.
Yuqui is also known as Yuki, Yuquí, Mbiá, Bia or Biá. Yuqui speakers call their language Mbiaye', Biá yë' ("language pf the people") or Biaye, and themselves Mbia ("the people"). It has been officially recognised as an indigeous language in Bolivia since 2000. It is written with the Latin alphabet, and there is a translation of the Bible in Yuqui.
