Vaiphei is a member of the Northern Zo-Mizo branch of the Tibeto-Burman language family. It is spoken by about 43,000 people mainly in the Indian state of Manipur in the northeast of India. In particular, it is spoken in the Churachandpur district in the south of Manipur. There are also speakers of Vaiphei in Indian states of Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura.
Vaiphei is closely related to languages such as Thadou, Hmar, Paite, Simte, Kom and Gangte. It is written with the Latin alphabet, and there is a Vaiphei translation of the Bible.
