Manjak (Manjáku)

Manjak is a member of the Bak branch of the Senegambian language family. It is spoken by about 320,000 people in Guinea-Bissau, Senegal and the Gambia. In particular, it is spoken in the Casamance area in the south of Senegal, and in the Bassarel and Babok areas in the Cacheu Region in western Guinea-Bissau.

Manjak is also known as Manjack, Mandjak, Manjaque, Manjaco or Njak. Dialects include Bok (uBok), Ulekes, Ucor, Ulund, Uyu, Unuab, Uteer, Uyool, Uyanga, Undin, Ubuey, Uguejan, Utimats and Uroongann. These dialects are sufficiently distinct from one another that they could be classified as separate languages.

Manjak became an officially recognised national language of Senegal in 2002, and an official spelling system for Manjak was launched by the government of Senegal in 2005. Other orthographies are available.
