Adi

Adi is a member of the Eastern Tani branch of the Tibeto-Burman language family. It is spoken by about 100,000 people in central parts of Arunachal Pradesh in the northeast of India. In particular, it is spoken in the West Siang, East Siang, Upper Siang, and Lower Dibang Valley districts of Arunachal Pradesh.

Adi is also known as Abor, Abor-Miri or Lhoba. Dialects include Padam, Minyong, Pasi, Bori and Karko. It is closely related to such languages as Apatani, Galo, Hill Miri and Nyishi.

Christian missionaries were the first to devise ways to write Adi with the Latin script in the early 20th century. Before then, it was an oral language. Several spelling systems were used. The current orthography was standarized by the Adi Agom Kebang, a literary authority for the language.
