SoundSpel is a spelling reform proposal for English devised and advocated particularly by Edward "Ed" Rondthaler (1905-2009), who started working on it in the 1980s. Rondthaler was a typographer and chairman of the American Literacy Council, and in 1986 he and Edward Lias published the Dictionary of simplified AMERICAN SPELLING - An alternative spelling for English, which included details of SoundSpel. It is based on American English pronunciation.
