Language Quiz 20 July 202519 July 2025 By Simon Here’s a recording in a mystery language. http://www.omniglot.com/soundfiles/blog/quiz200725.mp3 Do you know, or can you guess, the language?
An indigenous language of West Africa, probably from the francophone part of the region (Cameroon, CAR etc.). Reply
I agree with both Emanuel and Daniel. Perhaps it is spoken in Gabon? I thought I heard a word that sounded like Gabon in the clip. Reply
Yes, I also thought I heard ‘Gabon’ … but according to a clue from Simon the language is spoken in the two Kongo republics. Reply
On the news page the clue says it’s spoken in one of the Congos. It’s French-sounding. It sounds like they said “Africa” at the end so this may help find what they are talking about. Reply
I must be missing something since don’t remember seeing any clues from Simon. However, as I age I miss a lot of things! Reply
Here’s a clue: it’s a Bantu-based Creole language with French influences, and is spoken in the DRC and the Republic of the Congo. Reply
The mystery language is indeed Kituba, a Kikongo-based creole spoken in Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Reply

I think it may be a high acrolect French creole.

In that case it could be Kituba.
