Language Quiz 26 July 202626 July 2026 By Simon Here’s a recording in a mystery language. http://www.omniglot.com/soundfiles/blog/quiz260726.mp3 Do you know, or can you guess, the language?
Some of the sounds seem to be Japanese-ish so might it be a languages from the Japonic family like Okinawan, etc.? Reply
It sounds very Mongolian to me, especially with all the Welsh-style “ll” sounds. I can’t really narrow it down from there though. Reply
It definitely sounds Mongolic with the hissing/whispering overall sound from the lateral fricatives. However it doesn’t sound as harsh as Khalkha, which is definitely more guttural than the recording iirc, so I’ll go with something like Buryat. Reply
The mystery language is Chakhar (ᠴᠠᠬᠠᠷ), a variety of Mongolian spoken in the Inner Mongolia Region in northern China. Reply
