Upper Necaxa Totonac is a Central Totonac language spoken by about 3,400 people in Puebla in the southeast of Mexico. In particular, it is psoken in and around the villages of Chicontla, Patla, Cacahuatlán and San Pedro Tlaloantongo in the Necaxa River Valley in northern Puebla. Most speakers of Upper Necaxa Totonac are in their 40s or over, few children are acquiring it, and it is considered severely endangered as a result.
Upper Necaxa Totonac is also known as Patla-Chicontla Totonaca, Totonaca, Patla or Totonaco de Patla y Chicontla. These are some differences in pronunciation and lexicon in each of the villages where the language is spoken.
The alphabet shown below is a practical orthography developed in 2004 and based on spelling systems promoted by the Secretaría de Educación Públic (SEP - Secretariat of Public Education) of Mexico for Totonac languages. Other orthographies are available.
