Southern Tiwa

Southern Tiwa is a Tanoan language spoken mainly at Isleta Pueblo near Albuquerque in New Mexico. There are also some speakers at Sandia Pueblo in New Mexico, and in Ysleta del Sur near El Paso in Texas. In 2007 there were about 1,600 speakers of Southern Tiwa. There are three main dialects of Southern Tiwa: Sanida, Isleta and Ysleta del Sur, or Tigua. The first two are reportedly mutually intelligible.

Southern Tiwa has been taught in the Isleta Elementary School in Isleta Pueblo since 2015.
