Masalit (Masaraa / Masarak)

Masalit is a member of the Maban branch of the Nilo-Saharan language family. It is spoken by about 980,000 people in the southeast of Chad and in southwestern Sudan. In Chad, it is spoken in the Assoungha Department of Ouaddaï (Wadai / منطقة وداي) Province, and in Sudan it is spoken in around the city of Geneina (Al Junaynah / الجنينة) in West Darfur State (ولاية غرب دارفور).

Masalit is also known as Massalit, Massalat, Masala, Masara, Kaana Masaka, Kanaa Masarak or Jwisince. Dialects include Northern Masalit, Western Masalit and Southern Masalit.

Masalit was first documented by linguists in the 1960s. A grammar of the language was published in 1989, and some other material has been published since then. Masalit is written with the Latin script using a spelling system based on L'Alphabet national tchadien (Chadian National Alphabet)

Kitab âjii kana masaraka nî gîlaŋgi gi ye. Kitab gi ndaŋ-ndaŋ te - kitab gu gâr genan, ka Masaraa i gani indam ŋgo ke kalla mbo bîye mbo ninda yan gosiŋti. Ka Masaraa ŋgâri ta jam âjii wâji? Translation

This book is a collection of Massalit songs, old and new. The Massalit people compose songs for many occasions - weddings, circumcisions, festivals, work parties. There are songs of lament, of exhortation, of love, of fear, of suffering, of celebration.
