Cara is member of the Central Plateau group of the Benue-Congo branch of the Niger-Congo language family. It has about 3,000 speakers in Bassa Local Government Area in the northwest of Plateau State in central Nigeria. In particular, it is spoken in the villages of Anchuba, Gurum, Anjuk (Teriya), Amponte, Kipang, Kishanda, Ankimongi, Kindogiyon, Kigun and Kivep. The majority of Cara speakers are older adults. Young people are shifting to Hausa.
Cara is also known as Chara, Fachara, Fakara, Pakara, Tera, Terri, Tariya or Teriya, and the people who speak it call themselves Facara [fàʧáɾà], which means 'Cara speakers', and their language Cara [ʧáɾà].
