More language exchange

I came across yet another language exchange site today. It looks similar to other ones I’ve joined and I’ll give it a go. The site has a subscription-based ‘Gold’ membership, for $6 per month, which gives you extras not available with free membership, such as being able to contact other members. Regular members can only receive and reply to messages from gold members.

So far, the only language exchange site which has produced results for me is Mixxer. I’ve been contacted by people from all over the world via this site, with the majority of my contacts coming from China. Today I’ve chatting to people from China, Japan, Bulgaria, Norway and Korea.

  1. I have to agree wholeheartedly with what Simon’s said about Mixxer. It’s excellent. Within an hour of putting up my profile, someone contacted me, and I’m looking for other partners as we speak, or rather I type. I don’t know what it is about it, but it’s worked much better than the other ones so far.

  2. I also have another suggestion —

I think the level of response depends heavily on what language you are trying to study. Some sites are stronger in Europe / US than they are in Asia. I think all of these sites are also growing very quickly (and obviously hoping you’ll join!). I know italki has a lot of Chinese members — if that’s what you’re looking for (Mandarin, Cantonese, Shanghainese, Taiwanese)– I’m quite certain you’ll get a strong response from members there.

  3. Stay away from! At first, it seems very alluring. As you delve into the site, you quickly find out that you can’t talk with anybody unless you register and answer too many personal questions. After you register and give up that personal information, you CANNOT contact anyone! You have to be a passive participant with a description of yourself and pretty much begging people to contact you. All you really can do is watch people logon to a Text Chat area and read their descriptions. You can post requests and begs in the general Bulletin Board area for people to contact you but, ohhhhh….you cannot post your email address for these people to contact you!! This site does everything it can to make it near impossible to make a language connection. The only way to truly contact anyone is if you pay $6.00 a month and become a paying customer. The whole premise of the site relies on people who pay the fee so they can contact you. A poorly worded agreement states that you cannot post contact information but fails to tell what will happen if you do – you are banned from the website! You receive no warnings of any kind and receive a form letter email pointing you to the Service Agreement to read – but this will do no good for anyone as it does not tell what will happen. Bottom line…stay away from There are many more and far better online language communities that truly want to see people learn other languages.
