Here’s a recording in a mystery language.
Do you know, or can you guess, the language?
If you need a clue, listen to or read the Omniglot News on Radio Omniglot.
These quizzes are normally published every Sunday, and the answers are given the following Saturday here in the comments.
Apparently an Afro-Asiatic language, probably a variety of Arabic (e.g. ‘abuhu’ at 00:04) or a language with many Arabic loanwords. I cannot discern a single instance of ش or ج though … Perhaps a divergent form of Arabic from the ‘fringes’ (e.g. Chad, Eritrea)?
I think it’s Tigre or Tigrinya
It seems to me to be Afroasiatic. Is it possibly the parable of the Prodigal Son?
It could be, because of ‘abuhu’ & ‘abba’ … I think Sam Fox might be on the right track.
Actually, I think it’s Geez.
Sam is right, the mystery language is indeed Ge’ez, (ግዕዝ), the classical language of Ethiopia which is still used as a liturgical language by Ethiopian Christians and the Beta Israel Jewish community of Ethiopia.
Well done, Sam Fox!
