Language quiz

Not sure what happened yesterday, but for some unknown technical reason, this blog was inaccessible. Fortunately it’s working again today.

Anyway, today’s mystery language is a Native American one spoken mainly in Oklahoma and North Carolina.

  1. I have no idea what Cherokee sounds like, but based on the OK and NC clue, that would be my otherwise random guess… (without even listening)

  2. Cherokee without a doubt. It’s the language of my ancestors. I’m something like 1/16 cherokee and I’m from NC. The trail of tears is what divided the tribe between NC to Oklahoma.

  3. I guess then that must be my very first hearing of Cherokee. I mean, I’ve seen its alphabet several times, but….

  4. Thanks Simon–although just to set the record straight, I’m a Texan, not an Okie (although I don’t blame you, since my website is called ‘Hello Oklahoma.’). 🙂

If anyone is interested in the podcast above, the whole program is bilingual Cherokee/English, consisting of news, etc. from the Cherokee Nation, interspersed with Cherokee songs. The audio isn’t all that great, but it is interesting to hear the language.

  5. ACK, didn’t get here in time. I was going to say Cherokee too- even though I have no idea what it sounds like. That’s the only native language I could even think of them speaking here in NC.

You know, almost everyone here claims to be part cherokee- it’s kind of annoying.

  6. I can’t believe I’m always late to see the blog! I knew it was Cherokee (I’m 1/16th Cherokee) but for a few years I’ve been unable to find any material to help me learn the language, I have the syllabary down but I can’t write anything but names and very simple words. If anyone knows any website or product to help me learn the language that would be great!

  7. I’ve just recently found your blog and I’m really enjoying it. I especially like the language quizzes, although I don’t usually know more than, “something like russian,” or in this case, “not Lakota”!

  8. is it just me, or is like, everyone in the US part cherokee? I’m 1/8, and everytime i bring it up people just scoff at me or give me snide comments. The only reason I’m not registered is because my family moved out of Indian territory beofre the Rolls, and as such, we are not eligible. Argh.
