Going by the ‘timbre of the voice’ I’d say this is from the Indian subcontinent or maybe Afghanistan. There also is a conspicuous Arabic loanword – ‘barnamij’ – at 00:02 and 00:04. That’s all I can say at this time.
Simon, regarding last week’s language quiz: It seems to me that the same recording is not only featured on Omniglot under Tundra (Northern) Yukaghir but also under Forest (Southern) Yukaghir – where I found it. This goes back to that YouTube channel which is the source of the story/sample text. How can we be sure then to which of the two Yukaghir languages it belongs?
I agree with Emanuel that it could be from the Indian subcontinent. The way it seems to repeat things makes me wonder if it isn’t the Ten Commandments in some language.
Arabic.
Hank, we were on the wrong track (again): This language is spoken in Somalia!
Emmanuel – I’ve found a video in Southern Yukaghir for the Southern Yukaghir page. There may be others out there, but I haven’t found them yet.
Thank you, Simon!
The mystery language is Maay Maay (Af-Mai-Mai), a Lowland East Cushitic language spoken in souther Somlia.
