Language quiz 28 August 2016 By Simon Here’s a recording in a mystery language. Can you identify the language, and do you know where it’s spoken?
I hear tones and phonemes similar to Mandarin, but it’s not. Possibly one of the other Chinese languages. Reply
It is spoken in China, but isn’t a variety of Chinese. It’s a member of the Tibeto-Burman language family. Reply
I also thought it had to be a variety of Wu, but was confused by the retroflexes. But having seen that it’s a Tibeto-Burman language, I’m going to go for Bai, with the tense and harsh voice qualities I’m hearing in various syllables. Reply
The language is Eastern Yi ((Nasu), a member of the Loloish branch of the Tibeto-Burman language family spoken in Yunnan in China. The recording comes from the GRN. Reply
