they are aztec ideograms. they are used in dates and in the birthdate-based names of individuals. they might be found on the Sunstone of Tonatiuh.

i dunno if they are the same, but i am 100% positive that these are aztec. we had a whole huge project in my spanish class last year using several codices and some aztec scrolls, and these were all on them.
Aztec & Mayan hieroglyphs aren’t the same. They look very similar, though, TJ. Tonatiuh, just by the way, means “The Sun By Day” (if I’m remembering right) and was also the nickname bestowed on the blond conquistador Pedro de Alvarado.
I’d agree with Evans. They’re Aztec.
if Tonatiuh was given for a blond man … then what would be “the moon by night” … you know … for my hair 🙂
i remember reading that the aztecs called alvarado Tonatiuh.
i was just at the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum and they have a fiberglass copy of the sun disk from Tenochtitlan there. It was cool to know some of the symbols.
I was under the impression that mayan glyphs were more elaborate than aztec.
They are in fact Mixtec, rather than Aztec, though they are similiar to Aztec glyphs.
They come from Ancient Scripts and mean (from left to right) water, house, reed, earthquake, flint, rain, and grass.
the symbols seem kinda … not going along with their meaning… do they?

and some how “water” … but not much ………. i wonder if this is a real pic of a reed!
But the most distant to my eyes is the glyph for Grass ….. what does it mean!!?
