Language quiz 13 March 2016 By Simon Here’s a recording in a mystery language. Can you identify the language, and do you know where it’s spoken?
There ae a couple of Arabic words, and it doesn’t sound very far from Arabic. But since it’s in the quiz, it has to be fairly obscure. Soqotri? Reply
That sounds interesting. It sounds like it has a lot of consonants, maybe a Caucasian language? On the other hand, it does sound Semitic… Reply
Is it Maltese? It sounds like there’s something Arabic, right enough, but I also heard something approximating to Spanish. Am I right? Reply
Is this Arabic with Romanian influence . Although to my limited knowledge the Arabic community there is quite recent I think I hear Roumanian words for middle and in. Probably way out but we have to try. Reply
The answer is Tunisian Arabic (Tounsi / Derja / تونسي), a variety of Maghrebi Arabic spoken mainly in Tunisia The recording was made by Zein AlAbdeen Shbeeb. Reply
