Language quiz 14 December 2014 By Simon Here’s a recording in a mystery language. Can you identify the language, and do you know where it’s spoken?
Sounds more Austronesian to me with some Melanesian or Papuan flavour. I thought I heard a few instances of reduplication here and there. May be one of the Austronesian or non-Papuan languages spoken on the coasts of West Papua in Indonesia??
The answer is Wagawaga, a Malayo-Polynesian language spoken in Milne Bay Province in the south east of Papua New Guinea. The recording comes from the GRN.
Sounds to me like a Bantu language, but I cannot guess which.
