Can anyone decipher the writing below?

Brass piece in the Arabic script

It was sent in by a visitor to Omniglot and looks like the Arabic script to me.

  1. alxwrght says:

It says اهلا وسهلا “ahlan wi-sahlan” meaning welcome in Arabic.

  2. TJ says:

mhm, agree with alxwrght. Seems to be hung on a door (for two holes on the edges).

  3. Chris Miller says:

    Yup – as alxwright says.

Here’s a transcription with all the characters (including diacritics) that you see in the image:

    اهلاً و سهلاً

Instead of the more everyday ﻬ medial form of ه/ﻫ haa’, the calligraphy uses the simplified, more calligraphic ﮩ version and the و waw is superimposed on the angled alif of the first لاً laam-‘alif compound character.
