a feeling of danger<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a verb, <strong>to doom<\/strong> can mean:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To pronounce judgment or sentence on sb<\/li>\n<li>To condem<\/li>\n<li>To fix irrevocably the ill fate of sb<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It comes from Middle English <em>doom<\/em> [do\u02d0m] (a judgement, [legal] decision, justice, authority), from Proto-West Germanic <em>*d\u014dm<\/em> (judgement), from Proto-Germanic <em>*d\u014dmaz<\/em> (judgement, fame, repute), from PIE <em>*d\u02b0\u00f3h\u2081mos<\/em> (that which is put), from  <em>*d\u02b0eh\u2081-<\/em> (to do, put, place) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/doom#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>English words from the same roots include <strong>deed<\/strong>, <strong>deem<\/strong>, <strong>defect<\/strong> and <strong>wisdom<\/strong> and other words ending in <strong>-dom<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Category:English_terms_derived_from_the_Proto-Indo-European_root_*d%CA%B0eh%E2%82%81-\">source<\/a>]. <\/p>\n<p>Words in other languages from the same roots include <strong>doem<\/strong> (doom, condemnation, verdict, judgement) in Dutch, <strong>domare<\/strong> (judge, referee, umpire) in Swedish, <strong>domhus<\/strong> (courthouse) in Danish, <strong>\u0434\u0443\u043c\u0430<\/strong> (thought, meditation, duma [Russian legislature]) in Russian, <strong>duma<\/strong> (pride) in Polish, and <strong>d\u00e1il<\/strong> (tryst, betrothal, legislature) in Irish [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-European\/d%CA%B0eh%E2%82%81-\">source<\/a>]. <\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, one word for court in Old English was <em>d\u014dmh\u016bs<\/em> (&#8220;judgement house&#8221;).
