(<em>archaic<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It comes from Middle French <em>caisse<\/em> (money box, chest), from Occitan <em>caissa<\/em> from Latin <em>capsa<\/em> (box, case, holder, repository, bookcase), from <em>capi\u014d<\/em> (to take, capture, seize), from Old Latin <em>kapio<\/em>, from Proto-Italic <em>*kapj\u014d<\/em> (to take, seize), from Proto-Indo-European <em>*kapy\u00e9ti<\/em> (to be grasping), from <em>*kap-<\/em> (to seize, grab, hold) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/cash#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Words from the same roots include <strong>case<\/strong>, <strong>chase<\/strong>, <strong>have<\/strong>, <strong>haven<\/strong>, <strong>heave<\/strong>, <strong>heft<\/strong> and <strong>disciple<\/strong> in English, <strong>caja<\/strong> (box, case, bank) in Spanish, <strong>caisse<\/strong> (box, crate, cash register) in French, <strong>hebben<\/strong> (to have, possess, own, hold) in Dutch, and <strong>cuach<\/strong> (bowl, goblet) in Irish [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-European\/kap-\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Hang on, how is <strong>disciple<\/strong> related to <strong>cash<\/strong>? Well, it comes from Middle English <em>disciple<\/em> (disciple), from Old English <em>discipul<\/em> (disciple, scholar), from Latin <em>discipulus<\/em> (student, pupil, disciple, scholar), from <em>dis-<\/em> (asunder, apart) and Proto-Italic  <em>*kapelos<\/em> (one who takes), from <em>*kapi\u014d<\/em> (to take), from Proto-Indo-European <em>*kapy\u00e9ti<\/em>, etc. So a disciple or scholar could be one said to be who &#8216;takes apart&#8217; ideas, knowledge, etc. [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/disciple#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>There are many other words for <strong>cash<\/strong> and <strong>money<\/strong> in English, including <strong>brass<\/strong>, <strong>bread<\/strong>, <strong>dosh<\/strong>, <strong>dough<\/strong>, <strong>funds<\/strong>, <strong>moolah<\/strong>, <strong>readies<\/strong>, <strong>spondoolicks<\/strong> and <strong>wonga<\/strong> &#8211; do you know any others?
