The most common type of larch tree in Europe is the <strong>European larch<\/strong> (<em>Larix decidua<\/em>), which is native to northern Italy. Other types of larch are availble.<\/p>\n<p>The English word <strong>larch<\/strong> comes from early modern German <em>Larche\/L\u00e4rche<\/em>, from Middle High German <em>larche<\/em>, from Old High German <em>larihha<\/em>, from Latin <em>larix<\/em> (larch), from Ancient Greek <em>\u03bb\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03be<\/em> (l\u00e1rix &#8211; larch, Venice turpentine*), possibly from Gaulish <em>*devro<\/em> (oak?) from Proto-Celtic <em>*daru<\/em> (oak), from PIE <em>*d\u00f3ru<\/em> (tree) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/larch#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>*Venice turpentine<\/strong> = A thick substance made from the tree resin of the European larch (<em>Larix decidua<\/em>), formerly used as a component in the oil paintings to create glossy, translucent glazes [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Venice_turpentine#English\">source<\/a>].<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Words in the modern Celtic languages from the same Proto-Celtic root include: <strong>dair<\/strong> [d\u032a\u02e0a\u027e\u02b2] (oak) in Irish, <strong>dair<\/strong> [dar\u02b2] (oak) in Scottish Gaelic, <strong>darragh<\/strong> (oak) in Manx, <strong>d\u00e2r<\/strong> [\u02c8da\u02d0r] (oak tree, leader, mighty lord) in Welsh, <strong>dar<\/strong> [da\u02d0r \/ d\u00e6\u02d0r] (oak) in Cornish, and <strong>dar<\/strong> [d\u0251\u02d0r] (oak) in Breton [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Celtic\/daru\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Words from the same Proto-Celtic root in other languages include: <strong>l\u00e0rix<\/strong> in Catalan, <strong>lariks<\/strong> in Dutch <strong>learag<\/strong> in Scottish Gaelic, <strong>larch<\/strong> in English,  <strong>L\u00e4rche<\/strong> in German, and  <strong>l\u00e6rk<\/strong> in Danish, all of which mean <strong>larch<\/strong> (tree) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/larix#Latin\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, the French word <strong>m\u00e9l\u00e8ze<\/strong> (larch) has doubly Celtic roots: it comes from Franco-Proven\u00e7al (Dauphinois) <em>mel\u00e8zo<\/em> (larch tree), from Vulgar Latin <em>*melice<\/em> (larch), from Gaulish <em>*mel-<\/em> (larch) and Latin <em>larix<\/em> (larch).
