period in office of fixed length.<\/li>\n<li>With respect to a pregnancy, the period during which birth usually happens (approximately 40 weeks from conception).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It comes from Middle English <em>terme<\/em> (limit, end, goal, boundary), from Old French <em>terme<\/em> (limit, boundary), from Latin <em>terminus<\/em> (boundary, limit, end, period of time), from Proto-Italic <em>*termenos<\/em> (boundary stone), from Proto-Indo-European <em>*t\u00e9rmn\u0325 <\/em> (boundary, end), possibly from <em>*ter(h\u2082)-<\/em> (to pass through) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/term#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Words from the same roots include <strong>terminal<\/strong>, <strong>terminus<\/strong>, <strong>determine<\/strong>, <strong>avatar<\/strong>, <strong>thorough<\/strong> and <strong>through<\/strong> in English, <strong>terme<\/strong> (conclusion, end, term [word, expression], deadline, rent) in French, <strong>t\u00e9rmino<\/strong> (end, terminus, finish, conclusion, period, term) in Spanish, and <strong>\u03c4\u03ad\u03c1\u03bc\u03b1<\/strong> (t\u00e9rma &#8211; conclusion, end, goal, finishing line) in Greek [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-European\/t%C3%A9rmn%CC%A5\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>What links <strong>term<\/strong> with the <strong>Daleks<\/strong>*?
