<strong>antique<\/strong> (ancient, old), from Latin <em>ant\u012bquus<\/em> (old, ancient, aged, classic, traditional) from Proto-Indo-European <em>*h\u2082\u00e9nti-h\u2083k\u02b7-o-s<\/em> (&#8220;facing the front, in front of the eye&#8221;), from <em>*h\u2082\u00e9nti<\/em> (opposite, near, in front, before) and <em>*h\u2083ek\u02b7-<\/em> (to see, eye) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/antique#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Words from the same Latin root (<em>ant\u012bquus<\/em>) include <strong>antic<\/strong> in English, <strong>antik<\/strong> (ancient, antique) in German, and  <strong>antiguo<\/strong> (old, ancient, vintage) in Spanish [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/antiquus#Latin\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" Antigua<\/strong> or <strong>Santa Mar\u00eda de la Antigua<\/strong> in Seville Cathedral (see below) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antigua#Etymology\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" <strong>anticlockwise<\/strong> in English, <strong>antes<\/strong> (before, earlier, sooner) in Spanish, and <strong>anzi<\/strong> (on the contrary, indeed, actually) in Italian [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-European\/h%E2%82%82%C3%A9nti\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Other words from the PIE root <em>*h\u2083ek\u02b7-<\/em> (to see, eye) include <strong>eye<\/strong>, <strong>ocular<\/strong>,  <strong>ogle<\/strong> and <strong>window<\/strong> in English,  <strong>occhio<\/strong> (eye) in Italian, <strong>wyneb<\/strong> (face, surface) in Welsh, and <strong>oineach<\/strong> (honour, reputation) in Irish [<a
