It may have a handle to help open and close, a latch to hold it closed, and a lock that ensures it cannot be opened without a key.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It comes from Middle English <strong>dor(e)<\/strong> [\u02c8d\u0254\u02d0r(\u0259)] (door), from Old English <em>duru<\/em> [\u02c8du.ru] (door, opening) from Proto-West-Germanic <em>*dur<\/em> (door, hatch, flap) from Proto-Germanic <em>*durz<\/em> (door, hatch, flap), from PIE <em>*d\u02b0wer-<\/em> (door) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/door#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Words from the same roots include <strong>forum<\/strong>,  <strong>forensic<\/strong> and <strong>thyroid<\/strong> in English, <strong>d\u00f6rr<\/strong> (door) in Swedish, <strong>drws<\/strong> (door, doorway) in Welsh, <strong>dvor<\/strong> (court, courtyard) in Slovak and <strong>\u062a\u0631\u0633<\/strong> (tors &#8211; shield, buckler) in Persian [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-European\/d%CA%B0wer-\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, in Old English one word for window was <em>\u0113agduru<\/em> [\u02c8\u00e6\u035c\u0251\u02d0\u0261\u02ccdu.ru], or literally &#8220;eye-door&#8221;.
