It comes from Proto-Indo-European <em>*b\u02b0enH-tlom<\/em> (way, path) in the sense of &#8220;cleared path (in a wood)&#8221; [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Celtic\/banatlom\">source<\/a>]. <\/p>\n<p>Related words in the modern Celtic languages include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>bealaidh<\/strong> [b\u025bl\u032a\u02e0\u026a] = broom in Scottish Gaelic<\/li>\n<li><strong>banadl<\/strong> [\u02c8banadl] = broom in Welsh<\/li>\n<li><strong>banadhel<\/strong> = broom in Cornish<\/li>\n<li><strong>balan<\/strong> [\u02c8b\u0251\u02d0l\u00e3n] = broom in Breton<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They all mean broom, as in the shrub, although the exact species of broom plant they refer to may vary from language to language.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ceantar.org\/Dicts\/MB2\/mb03.html\">An Etymological Dictionary of the Gaelic Language<\/a> by Alexander MacBain (1982), there is a cognate in Irish: <strong>beally\/i<\/strong>, however it doesn&#8217;t appear in any of the Irish dictionaries I&#8217;ve checked.<\/p>\n<p>The French word <strong>balai<\/strong> (broom, broomstick, brush) ultimately comes from the same Proto-Celtic root, via Old French <em>balain<\/em> (bundle of broom), Middle Breton <em>balain, balazn<\/em>, Old Breton <em>balan<\/em> (broom) and Gaulish <em>*balano-<\/em> (broom, broom plant), as does <strong>b\u00e1lago<\/strong> (straw, Spanish broom) in Spanish and <strong>balea<\/strong> (broom) in Galician, possibly via Celtiberian <em>*b\u00e1lago-, *b\u00e1laco-<\/em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Celtic\/d%C5%ABnom\">source<\/a>]. <\/p>\n<p>Words same PIE roots possibly include <strong>bana<\/strong> (course, path, trajectory) in Swedish, <strong>baan<\/strong> (road, path, track, job, orbit) in Dutch, and <strong>Bahn<\/strong> (route, trail, railway) in German [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Germanic\/ban%C5%8D\">source<\/a>]. <\/p>\n<p>More about words for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/celtiadur\/2022\/07\/12\/brushes-and-broom\/\">Brushes and Broom<\/a> and related things in Celtic languages.<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, the tune at the beginning of this episode is one of my own compositions called <strong>Apple Blossom \/ Blodau Afal<\/strong>.
