guidebook.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It comes from Middle English <em>g\u012bde \/ gidde \/ guide<\/em> (guide, pilot, helmsman), from Old French <em>guide<\/em> (guide) from Old Occitan <em>guida<\/em> (guide), from <em>guidar<\/em> (to guide, lead), from Frankish <em>*w\u012btan<\/em> (to show the way, lead), from Proto-Germanic <em>*w\u012btan\u0105<\/em> (to see, know, go, depart), from PIE <em>*weyd-<\/em> (to see, know) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/guide#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Words from the same roots include <strong>druid<\/strong>, <strong>history<\/strong>, <strong>idea<\/strong>, <strong>vision<\/strong>, <strong>wise<\/strong> and <strong>wit<\/strong> in English, <strong>gwybod<\/strong> (to know) in Welsh, <strong>fios<\/strong> (knowledge, information) in Irish and <strong>veta<\/strong> (to know) in Swedish [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-European\/weyd-\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The English word <strong>guide<\/strong> has been borrowed into various other languages, including Japanese: <strong>\u30ac\u30a4\u30c9<\/strong> (gaido &#8211;
