From about 250 BC, the area, particularly the \u00cele de la Cit\u00e9 (see above), an island on the River Seine, was home to the <em>Parisioi<\/em>, part of the Gaulish Senones tribe. <\/p>\n<p>After the Romans conquered the area in 52 BC, they set up a town on the Left Bank of the Seine which they called <strong>Lutetia Parisiorum<\/strong> (&#8220;Lutetia of the Par\u012bsi\u012b&#8221;). This later became <em>Parisius<\/em>, and eventually <strong>Paris<\/strong>  [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paris\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The Gaulish name of the tribe, <em>Parisioi<\/em>, which was Latinized as <em>Par\u012bsi\u012b<\/em>, possibly comes from the Gaulish word <em>*parios<\/em> (cauldron), from Proto-Celtic <em>*k\u02b7aryos<\/em> (cauldron) from the PIE <em>*k\u02b7er-<\/em> (to do, make, build) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Celtic\/k%CA%B7aryos\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Related words in the modern Celtic languages include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>coire<\/strong> [\u02c8k\u025b\u027e\u02b2\u0259] = large pot, cauldron, boiler in Irish<\/li>\n<li><strong>coire<\/strong> [k\u0254r\u02b2\u0259] = kettle, corrie, cauldron in Scottish Gaelic<\/li>\n<li><strong>coirrey<\/strong> = cauldron, boiler, maelstrom in Manx<\/li>\n<li><strong>pair<\/strong> [\u02c8pai\u032fr] = cauldron, large pot, boiler in Welsh<\/li>\n<li><strong>per<\/strong> [\u02c8pe\u02d0r] = cauldron in Breton<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Words from the same Proto-Celtic roots, via Gaulish and Latin, include <strong>paiolo<\/strong> (copper cooking pot, cauldron) in Italian, <strong>perol<\/strong> (cauldron) in Catalan, <strong>perol<\/strong> (cauldron) in Spanish, and <strong>pair\u00f2l<\/strong> [pai\u032f\u02c8\u027e\u0254l] (kettle) in Occitan (Languedocien) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Latin\/pariolum\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Words from the same PIE root include <strong>Britain<\/strong>, <strong>Brittany<\/strong> and <strong>karma<\/strong> in English, <strong>cruth<\/strong> [k\u027e\u02e0\u028a(h)] (shape, appearance, state) in Irish, <strong>pryd<\/strong> [pr\u0268\u02d0d] (sight, appearance, aspect) in Welsh, and <strong>\u0915\u093e\u092e<\/strong> [k\u0251\u02d0m] (work, task, job, function) in Hindi [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-European\/k%CA%B7er-\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Britain<\/strong> and <strong>Brittany<\/strong> come from Middle English <em>Britayne\/Breteyn<\/em> (Britain, Brittany), from Anglo-Norman <em>Bretai(g)ne<\/em> (Britain, Brittany), from Latin <em>Brit(t)\u0101nnia<\/em> ([Great] Britain, [Roman province of] Britannia), from <em>\u0392\u03c1\u03b5\u03c4\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/em> (Brettan\u00ed\u0101 &#8211; Brittania, Great Britain), ultimately from Proto-Brythonic <em>*Pritan\u012b<\/em> (Briton(s)), from Proto-Celtic <em>*K\u02b7ritan\u012b\/*K\u02b7riten\u012b<\/em>, from the PIE <em>*k\u02b7er-<\/em> (to do, make, build) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Britain#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>So the name <strong>Paris<\/strong> has Celtic roots. How about <strong>Lutetia<\/strong>?
