a throne), from Old French <em>chaiere<\/em> (chair, seat, throne) from Latin <em>cathedra<\/em> [\u02c8ka.t\u02b0e.dra] (armchair, ceremonial chair, office\/rank of a teacher or bishop, pulpit, chair), from Ancient Greek <em>\u03ba\u03b1\u03b8\u03ad\u03b4\u03c1\u03b1<\/em> [ka\u02c8\u03b8e.\u00f0ra] (seat, posterior, base of a column, imperial throne), from <em>\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac<\/em> [ka\u02c8ta] (down) and <em>\u1f15\u03b4\u03c1\u03b1<\/em> [\u02c8e.\u00f0ra] (seat, chair, stool, bench), from PIE <em>*sed-<\/em> (to sit) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/chair#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>English words from the same roots include <strong>cathedra<\/strong> (the chair or throne of a bishop, the rank of bishop), <strong>cathedral<\/strong>, <strong>catastrophe<\/strong>, <strong>cataract<\/strong> and <strong>chaise<\/strong> (an open, horse-drawn carriage for one or two people).<\/p>\n<p>Words from the same roots in other languages include <strong>cadair<\/strong> (chair), and <strong>cadeirlan<\/strong> (cathedral) in Welsh, <strong>cathaoir<\/strong> (chair, seat, throne) in Irish [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/cathedra#Latin\">source<\/a>], and words for <strong>cathedral<\/strong> in many other languages [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/cathedralis#Latin\">source<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The native English words for <strong>chair<\/strong> or <strong>seat<\/strong> were <strong>stool<\/strong> and <strong>settle<\/strong>.
