The word comes from the Irish <strong>seamr\u00f3g<\/strong> (shamrock), from the Old Irish <em>semr\u00f3c<\/em>, a diminutive of <em>semar<\/em> (clover, shamrock), from Proto-Celtic <em>*semar\u0101<\/em>, possibly from Proto-Indo-European <em>*semh\u2081r-\/*smeh\u2081r-<\/em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/shamrock\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Related words in the modern Celtic language include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>seamr\u00f3g<\/strong>  [\u02c8\u0283am\u02e0\u027e\u02e0o\u02d0\u0261] = shamrok and <strong>semair<\/strong> = clover in Irish.<\/li>\n<li><strong>siumrag<\/strong> [\u0283um\u0259rag] = clover, shamrock, wood sorel,  and <strong>semair<\/strong> [\u0283\u025bm\u026ar\u02b2] = shamrock, clover in Scottish Gaelic<\/li>\n<li><strong>shamrag<\/strong> = clover, shamrock, wood sorel in Manx<\/li>\n<li><strong>siamroc\/samrog<\/strong> = shamrock in Welsh (borrowed from English)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Shamrock in Cornish <strong>teyrdelen<\/strong> (\u201cthree leaves\u201d). In Breton it\u2019s <strong>trefle<\/strong>, which was borrowed from the French <strong>tr\u00e8fle<\/strong> (clover, shamrock); or <strong>melchonenn<\/strong>, which is cognate with the Cornish <strong>mellyon<\/strong> (clover), and the Welsh <strong>meillion<\/strong> (clover, trefoil, clubs (a suit in cards)).
