absence of violence.<\/li>\n<li>A state free of oppressive and unpleasant thoughts and emotions<\/li>\n<li>A state free of war<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It comes from Middle English <strong>pees<\/strong> [p\u025b(\u02d0)s] (peace), from Anglo-Norman <strong>peis<\/strong> (peace), from Latin <em>p\u0101x<\/em> (peace, rest quiet, ease, grace), from Proto-Indo-European <em>*p\u00e9h\u2082\u1e31-s<\/em> (peace) from  <em>*peh\u2082\u1e31<\/em> (to join, attach; agreement, setttlement) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/peace#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Words from the same PIE roots include <strong>pay<\/strong>, <strong>pact<\/strong>, <strong>fair<\/strong> (light in colour, just, equitable), and possibly <strong>fang<\/strong> in English; <strong>paix<\/strong> (peace), <strong>payer<\/strong> (to pay) and <strong>pacte<\/strong> (pact, deal) in French; <strong>paz<\/strong> (peace) and <strong>pagar<\/strong> (to pay) in Spanish, and <strong>pax<\/strong> (dibs &#8211; to claim a stake to something) in Swedish [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-European\/peh%E2%82%82%E1%B8%B1-\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Other words from the same roots include the Irish <strong>p\u00f3g<\/strong>, the Scottish Gaelic <strong>p\u00f2g<\/strong> and the Manx <strong>paag<\/strong>, all of which mean kiss and come, via Old Irish and Brythonic, from the Latin <em>(dare) p\u0101cem<\/em> (to give pace), which was originally a kiss used as a sign of peace during a mass [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/p%C3%B3c#Old_Irish\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In Old English there were different words for peace: <em>sibb<\/em> (peace, relationship), as in <strong>sibling<\/strong>, and <em>fri\u00fe<\/em> [fri\u03b8] (peace, refuge, sancutary), which is cognate with <strong>free<\/strong> in English, <strong>frid<\/strong> (peace, serenity) in Swedish, and <strong>vrede<\/strong> (peace, quiet, tranquility) in Dutch [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Category:Spanish_terms_borrowed_from_Ta%C3%ADno\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, the band <strong>The Pogues<\/strong> were originally called <strong>Pogue Mahone<\/strong>, which is an anglicized version of the Irish expression <strong>p\u00f3g mo th\u00f3in<\/strong> (kiss my arse) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Pogues\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/wC1kR43LeUI\">video<\/a> I made of this information:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wC1kR43LeUI\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allow=\"accelerometer;
